The Katherine
Smooth & voluminous with a slight bend on the ends
Katharine Burr Blodgett, 1898 – 1979, was born on N.Ferry St in the Stockade & was the first woman ever to earn a PhD in physics which she obtained from Cambridge. She moved back to Schenectady to dedicate her life to her work at GE & held patents from her invention of non- reflective glass.
The Jeanne
Signature style, a voluminous blowout with bend at the ends
Jeanne Robert Foster, 1872-1970, was born in the Adirondacks. Jeanne was a famous Poet, Model & Activist, one of her most famous poetry pieces titled Neighbors of Yesterday. She moved to Schenectady in 1932 to work as a social worker & had a major impact on local municipal housing.
The Deborah
Big hair, hollywood volume with a blow dry set
Deborah Glen-Sanders, 1721-1786, inherited her family’s Glen Mansion in Scotia. Deborah’s painted portrait from 1739 is hanging in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum in Williamsburg, VA which portrays her sense of style & social prominence.
The Carmela

Carmela Ponselle, 1887-1977, was born in Schenectady to Italian immigrants & spent her early childhood here. She made her mark as a renowned mezzo-soprano of the opera at the MET in NYC, her career was closely intertwined with her accompanied sister Rosa. During retirement she left a legacy of human service to the handicapped.
The Julia

Julia A.J. Foote, 1823-1901,was born in Schenectady to former slaves. She was ordained as the first woman deacon in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church & the second to be ordained as an elder. Her life is recounted in her autobiography, A Brand Plucked from the Fire.
The Hattie

Harriet Leonard Colburn, 1856-1931, was a Suffragist & leader of civic organizations in Schenectady. She was born into a family of strong women; her mother was the first woman to run for mayor of NYC. Hattie was the first woman President of the Schenectady Historical Society & she also founded the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The Fox
Effortless curl + beachy waves built into the blowdry
Catalyntje De Vos Bradt was born in 1628 in Holland, she emigrated May 17, 1641 arriving August 20, 1641 with her parents. She was the only single woman proprietor in the Stockade. She had at least 4 children & lived through the great massacre in the Stockade.
The Elizabeth
An updo
Dr. Elizabeth Van Renselear Gillette,1874-1959, began practicing medicine in 1900 in Schenectady. Her home still stands today at the entrance of the Stockade. She was the first woman elected in the State Assembly & was in office writing laws in 1919 before women even had the right to vote!
